Six Types of Electric Motors for Particular Environment & Applications

Almost 30% of total power consumption in the industries is caused by electric motors. The selection of the right type of motor contributes to profitability and growth rate. Electric motors are finding new applications as the importance of automation is increasing. And, to meet out the new shift in demand for electric motors from industries, the top electric motor manufacturers like Crompton Greaves are expanding their product range. Now, you have more choices to buy an electric motor for any application but your focus should be on just the best; therefore, fix a checklist for the particular application.

Checklist for Selecting the Right Electric Motor:

Input Power Source:

  • Voltage
  • Frequency
  • Control type
  • Current
  • Efficiency

Environment:

  • Temperature (indoor/outdoor)
  • Ingress Protection (IP) rating

Motor Performance:

  • Starting / stall torque
  • Speed & torque
  • Load profile
  • Duty cycle

Motor Specs:

  • Size / Weight
  • Maintenance
  • Noise
  • Motor life expectancy

Six Types Of Electric Motors Used More Industrial Applications:

  1. Explosion and Flame Proof Motors: These are designed for protective operation in explosive or inflammable environments like in solvent extraction plants, petrol and diesel dispensing pumps, fertilizer plants, chemical factories, petrochemical industries and other areas that come under Zone1, Zone 2 or Class1 Div 1 and 2. These are available in 0.37 kw to 355 kw range.
  2. TEFC Electric Motors: These are enclosed fan-cooled electric motors designed especially for industrial applications. The enclosure doesn’t allow outside air to circulate inside of the motor. An external fan is provided to blow the outside air over the motor frame to keep it cool. These are commonly used in food processing facilities, hammer mills, pellet mills etc.
  3. Energy Efficient Motors: Energy-efficient motors are finding increasing applications because of being 2 to 6 percent more energy efficient than their close counterparts. These are designed to comply with IEC, IS & NEMA standards. CG energy efficient motors are available in Eff I / IE2 / IE3 grades.
  4. HVAC Motors: These are basically designed in powder coated rolled steel body with a permanent split capacitor or 3 Phase type. Thermal protection comes as an optional feature. The major application areas include air curtain, condenser unit, chiller unit, exhaust fan, blowers and fan coil unit.
  5. Squirrel Cage Slip Ring Induction Motors with CACW Enclosure: Air circuit water- cooled design makes these electric motors an ideal choice for the industries having VFD operations. The major application areas include pump, crusher, conveyor, fan, blower, pulp machines, feeder motors etc.
  6. Slip Ring Induction Motors: These are used for the applications that need high starting torque. Since squirrel cage type motors produce comparatively low starting torque, slip ring motors are considered the better alternative in areas like elevators, printing presses, cranes, and hoists etc. Crompton Greaves flameproof motors are available in 22 kw to 160 kw range.

Concluding Note:

The growth rate of any production unit highly depends upon the proper selection of electric motors for each application keeping in mind the special requirements for the particular environment. The top brands like CG electric motors are available in a wide range to suit the particular applications; even then, you can ask for the customized solution for a specific need.
