The words like variable speed drive systems, gear motors, planetary gearboxes, softstarter etc have become synonymous with several industrial processes and automation. However, these terms seem too technical for an average individual. Given below is a brief on some of these terms which will help an individual to understand them better.
Gears
Gearsare mechanical parts which are used to relay force from a power source to the required device. They have become an integral part of our lives and one of the most commonly known applications of this machinery part is with respect to vehicle engines. The power from the vehicle’s motor is converted to torque and force needed to set the vehicle in motion. Several gear varieties are available to suit the varied requirements. Spur gears, helical gears, bevel gears, worm gears, hypoid gears are just to name a few of them. These parts are stocked by the helical gear dealers, inline helical gear dealers and so on.
Variable Speed Drives
Variable speed drives play an important role in the working of an electric motor. They help in better motor control as they adjust the voltage supply to the motor depending upon the load. Optimal speeds of the motor can be achieved and only the required amount of power consumed. The use of this device thus saves a lot in the factory’s electric bills. A variable speed drive panel is therefore used in those situations where the electric motor is not required to work at full speed all the while. These speed drives enable the motor to start and stop gradually and smoothly thus avoiding sudden jolts or shocks. The wear and tear of the electric motor is reduced and its life enhanced because of this device. All variable speed drive panel dealers will vouch for the importance of this device for the efficient working of an electric motor.
Softstarter
Softstarter is a device which is used in the starting system of a motor for obtaining optimized start and stop sequences. It can be made as an electrical or a mechanical device or could be a combined version. A large inrush current is needed when an AC motor is accelerated to full speed through a full voltage connection. At such times, the uncontrolled torque of the AC motor can jolt or shock the connected equipment causing great damage. Reduced Voltage Soft starters control the terminal voltage and help in reducing the inrush current and limiting the torque. The shock to the connected equipment that can arise during the startup of a motor is reduced as there is a gradual rise to full speed. Similarly, soft starters provide a gradual ramp to stop and also prevent damage to the connected equipment in case of sudden stopping. When the question of torque and speed control arises during a motor startup or stopping, soft starters come into play. Expensive equipment is thus protected and the life span of the motor increases. Crompton Greaves soft starter dealers and diesel engine dealers can explain the criticality of this device in great detail.
